CHALLENGES

The property presented a significant 14-foot elevation change from the driveway down to the patio area. Rather than installing large retaining walls, the design required a solution that would manage grade transitions naturally while maintaining structural stability. The deck was already in place, adding constraints to layout and elevation alignment. Proper drainage was also critical to prevent erosion and long-term settling.

THE PLAN

The strategy focused on working with the elevation rather than fighting it. A series of strategically placed steppers were installed to create gradual, intentional transitions between levels while maintaining safe and comfortable movement throughout the space.

The patio was constructed using Ledge Smooth XL 3-Piece Limestone Quarry Blue, framed with a double border to secure the field stone and provide visual definition. A circular inlay was integrated to add architectural interest and anchor the entertainment area.

The outdoor kitchen was designed as a functional centerpiece, featuring a Blaze grill insert, dedicated smoker ledge, and integrated wood storage box. Structural base preparation and proper pitch ensured water would move away from both the patio and existing deck.

THE RESULTS

What was once a challenging grade is now a dynamic, multi-level outdoor living environment.

The stepped transitions feel intentional and inviting rather than abrupt, allowing the elevation change to enhance the design. The circular inlay creates a focal gathering space, while the outdoor kitchen delivers full functionality for entertaining.

Through thoughtful grading and structural preparation, the project successfully transformed a difficult slope into a refined and highly usable outdoor setting built for long-term performance.
