The 4 Basic Types of Retaining Walls Compared

Chris D. • January 20, 2023

According to Garden Tabs, depending on the material, soil, and groundwater, a permanent retaining wall can last between 25 and 100 years. Retaining walls can work as a way to stop erosion or soil movement, or they can be part of a landscaping design that includes hardscape pavers . Whatever job you need your retaining wall to fulfill, here are four of the most common types to consider.

1. Cantilever Concrete Wall

If you have a slope or hill on your property, a cantilever concrete wall is an effective choice. This type of structure offers a lot of stability. The type of wall is an affordable option if you don't need a lot of height with your wall. They can also be faced with stucco, textured concrete, or composite. Cantilever walls are also a nice way to enhance your landscaping. Hardscape pavers are also an attractive complement to this type of retaining wall.

2. Reinforced Retaining Wall

If you have a lot of soil to retain, a reinforced retaining wall will get the job done. The concrete used to construct the wall also provides enough weight to hold back soil and backfill. If you have a sizable slope on your property or are battling erosion, a reinforced retaining wall is a smart choice.

3. Gravity Retaining Wall

One of the most common types of retaining walls, a gravity wall is usually constructed with concrete. You can also have a gravity wall made of wood blocks or timber. In addition to soil retention, many homeowners use gravity walls for privacy and noise protection from nearby roads.

4. Counterfort Wall

Similar to a cantilever wall, the counterfort retaining wall is generally used in more commercial or public settings. It provides greater stability due to the two supports on either side of the seam. This makes counterfort retainment walls ideal for heights in excess of 10 meters. If you've ever noticed the large soundproofing walls that line a highway, then you've likely seen quite a few counterfort walls in action.
